Hello,

I am new and am glad to be here. I hope I can learn and maybe help others in the future.

I am posting in regards to a ring I found and a marking on it. On the inside of the ring, it has the letters PD stamped very strongly. I did some research and found this is normally a marking for palladium. Yet, I also learned that such markings are normally similar to silver with percentages like PAL 925 or Pl 925.

My ring only says PD. Also, I read that palladium has a very low magnetic property. When I applied a strong magnet I have to the ring, it barely attracted it.

Now, I think the ring does seem to have some kind of plate on it and I am pretty sure the diamonds are small rhinestones.

From this, is it likely the ring is palladium? Are there any tests I can do? Will I have to take it to a jeweler?

Thanks,

Hello,

I own a ring that is a mixture (not plated) of silver and palladium per the manufacturer. It is marked simply 925. Silver and gold are not attracted to a magnet and, in fact, the precious metal buyer I utilize uses the magnet test to do quick checks on small pieces of unmarked metals. Otherwise, he does have test products to test metals and any jeweler or metal buyer can check for you (usually for free).

Since your ring is attracted to a magnet, perhaps it is base metal with a palladium plating.

Good Luck!

Is palladium used for plating?
I've never seen it.
Usually the member of the plat family used for plating is rhodium.

Barbra,

Jeweler, Pascal Mouawad, has been utilizing palladium plating on some of his designs. I do not believe he is the first to do so.

Palladium is used as a lower cost alternative to rhodium plating. It’s not as tarnish resistant as platinum or rhodium, but palladium does resist discoloring and is quite stable under most conditions.
Used mostly over sterling silver and gold items, palladium can also be plated onto several other metals (steel, bronze, brass). It has good resistance to scratching.
Palladium can be used as an undercoat for gold vermeil jewelry. Palladium is used as an alternative to nickel finishes because it usually doesn’t cause sensitive skin to react.

OK...I guess the source of that is

http://www.artisanplating.com/pricing/p ... adium.html

But I have never personally heard of it being used.
None of the craftsman I work with use it.
